General Information about Algae Growth

What is it?

Most people think the stains are tree droppings or moss, actually these unsightly stains are caused by a form of algae know as Gloeocaspa magma. This organism penetrates the shingle by forming roots that bury themselves into limestone filler that serves as the base for asphalt shingles. Over a period of time these roots will loosen and eventually separate the granules, which protect and are the main part of the shingle itself, from the limestone and asphalt base causing premature shingle failure.

Where does it come from?

Eighty percent of all homes in the southeast and southern U. S. show symptoms of algae infestation, due to the warm humid conditions and the abundant use of asphalt shingles. The algae can be carried by the wind or even birds for that matter, thus the homes around you serve as an incubator for this organism.

What other problems do these organisms present?

As this organism is rapidly growing above you it can also find its way into your home by means of entry through soffits, ridge vents, roof turbines, gable vents, and vent pipes. These entry points provide the essential warm, dark environment the algae seek and need to thrive. Interior walls, furnace and heating unit closets, around hot water heaters, underneath sinks and cabinets, and throughout attics and basements it can grow unknowingly to you causing respiratory problems or other foul odors.

What can be done to safely remove these “stains”?

The only safe way to remove roof borne algae is through chemical application and low pressure high volume rinse. Chlorine bleaching, high pressure cleaning and stiff brush scrubbing will all lead to granule loss and premature roof failure and provide only a temporary solution to an ongoing problem.

What are the benefits of having my roof cleaned?

· No Chlorine · No High Pressure · Environmentally safe

· Extends roof life
· Adds value to your home
· Provides healthier living area
· Prevents premature roof replacement
· Aids in sell or marketing of real estate

Will the stains come back?

Without the proper application of an algaecide after cleaning, the organism will come back as soon as18 months. The algaecide protectant will cling to the shingle itself thus preventing the algae to grow.
